LAN, NAS and VPN Explained

If you ever listened to an IT conversation in an office, you probably heard the words LAN, NAS and VPN.

LAN (Local Area Network): this is your internal network. Everything connected inside your office (computers, printers, servers) is part of the LAN.

NAS (Network Attached Storage): a shared storage device on the network. It is basically a "company hard drive" that multiple users can access with permissions.

VPN (Virtual Private Network): a secure tunnel that lets you connect to a private network from outside. This is how people work remotely while still accessing internal resources.

What these solve:

• LAN keeps office devices connected and organized

• NAS centralizes files so they are not scattered across random laptops

• VPN allows remote access without exposing everything directly to the internet

Bottom line

LAN is the local network, NAS is shared storage, VPN is secure remote access. Most businesses need at least one of these, and growing businesses usually need all three.
